Good old Francis of Assisi. His prayer has touched and led many people through the centuries.
This part of the prayer is hitting me today, as I think about all the people on the front lines caring for those who are ill, particularly for those in the hospital, in ICU.
I know a good many doctors and nurses and have been in hundreds and hundreds of hospital rooms through the years. I see the dedication and hard work and deep caring of those in the healing professions. I see them as members of God’s healing team. They put in long hours. Their hearts are touched by the lives of the many who come into their care.
And I know from my conversations that they find it a distinct honor and privilege to be doing what they do. It is wearing. It is hard, particularly these days. It requires much of them and of their families. But, they find purpose and meaning in what they do.
This is true of firefighters and police and military and others who give their lives to help people.
This can be true in your life and my life too, as we focus on giving ourselves.
