TEACHERS LEARN TOO
Be a lifelong learner.
And one way to keep learning as we get older is to be a teacher. Oh, I’m not talking about being a professional teacher in a classroom, although that is not a bad thing to do. I am talking about mentoring, coaching, sharing with someone else. It might be a neighbor or your grandchildren or someone else.
Dr. Jenkins had a woodshop with table saws and planers and drills and all kinds of cool tools. Under his supervision, he taught me how to use them safely. I learned a lot from him and I imagine he learned something from me as well.
I’ve been teaching for almost five decades now and it is true. The teacher learns more than the students. I’ve taught ethics at the university level. I’ve taught chaplains and chaplain assistants how to prepare to go to war. I’ve taught everyday folk how to better understand the scriptures. I enjoy teaching. I enjoy just as much what I have learned by sharing with others.
Teachers learn too.
